Winter in Vegas

There is something special about winter time in Las Vegas. Stop chuckling, folks in colder climes, it DOES get relatively cold in Vegas in the winter. Relatively. Being exposed to triple digit heat for three to four months makes the sudden dip into the 60s very noticeable. And sudden dip it does. There is invariably one day in the fall where the AC will get turned off and the heater turned on - and vice versa in the spring.

The change in "season" in Vegas is sudden, leaving no time to acclimate to the pending shift in closet fillers. One day the inside of the car is 120 degrees, and the next night one's breath is visible. The tolerance for the shift is very high for at least 36 hours. After that, everyone grumbles about how "damn hot" or "damn cold" it is. After spending more than three decades in Florida, it is safe to say those folks are not much better.

The "Spirit of the Season" is widely visible in the Vegas valley the day after Thanksgiving. Houses and lawns are decorated with lights and festive ornamentation and local businesses have their shop windows painted and soaped up overnight. Some places, like Ethel M's in Henderson, have amazing light displays that open before Thanksgiving and run until January. Bundling up to go see these lights is something not to be missed, and somehow have a placating effect on the negative attitudes toward the colder temperatures. In these moments, colder is better and all seems right with the world.

Go take a stroll and see for yourself.
